The Huron County Democratic Party is sponsoring an essay contest with the winner to receive a $2,500.00 scholarship to the learning institution of her or his choice. The contest is open to all seniors resident in Huron County graduating in May/June 2022, whether enrolled in a public or private school, or home schooled.

The scholarship will be paid to the college, university or professional training institute of the student's choice. Students seeking professional licenses, technical training or apprenticeships, as well as those seeking academic degrees, are welcome to apply.

The essay topic: "There are renewed efforts to ban books in schools and libraries that teach specific areas of US history. Is this a violation of the First Amendment?" There are several questions to be considered. Contestants will write a double-spaced essay of 600 to 750 words. The full application form is available through your high school guidance counselor or by going on line to hurondems.org . The deadline for applications is April 15.

The essays will be judged blind. The judges will not know the name, school or gender of the writer. The scholarship will be awarded by mid-May. The winner's essay will be offered to local newspapers for publication. Also, the winner will be invited to present the essay at the Huron County Democrats' annual banquet.

The organizers want to encourage broader thinking and participation among young people in the democratic process, learning how government functions, vetting candidates, and voting in local, state and federal elections.
